There are four main groups of jobs in this occupational area:

ICT management jobs usually include the following main tasks:

  • planning, organising, directing and co-ordinating the work needed to operate and provide information communication technology services
  • maintaining and developing associated network facilities
  • providing software and hardware support.

Job titles include:

  • Computer manager
  • Computer operations manager
  • Data processing manager/IT manager
  • Systems manager

IT strategy and planning professional jobs usually include responsibility for providing advice on the effective use of information technology to either:

  • solve business problems or
  • improve the effectiveness of business functions.

Job titles include:

  • Computer consultant
  • Software consultant

Forensic/security professionals would take part in investigations for their employer. For example the police, security services or a major bank.  Investigations might cover:

  • hacking, online scams and fraud
  • political, industrial and commercial espionage
  • terrorist communications
  • possession of illegal pornography
  • theft of sensitive company information by employees.

These jobs would typically include the following tasks:

  • securing the IT system or hardware, so that it could not be tampered with
  • using various forensic methods and specialist computer programs to find, recover and copy data, unlock digital images that have been altered to mask the identity of a place or person and follow electronic data trails
  • carefully documenting each stage of the investigation
  • presenting technical findings to employers and in some cases acting as a technical or expert witness in court cases.

  • Computer crime analyst
  • Data recovery manager
  • Digital evidence recovery technician
  • Digital forensic analyst
  • e-discovery analyst
  • Forensic investigator
  • Forensic computer analyst
  • Global security analyst

Software professional jobs usually include responsibility for all aspects of the following for software systems:

  • Design
  • Application
  • Development
  • Operation.

Job titles include:

  • Analyst-programmer
  • Computer programmer
  • Software engineer
  • Systems analyst
  • Systems designer

 IT technician jobs

There are two main groups within this occupational area:

  • IT operations technicians
  • IT user support technicians

 IT operations technicians are usually responsible for:

  • the day-to-day running of computer systems and networks including the preparation of backup systems
  • performing regular checks to make sure that the systems function well.

Job titles include:

  • Computer operator
  • Database manager
  • IT technician
  • Network technician
  • Systems administrator
  • Web master

IT user support technicians are usually responsible for providing technical support, advice and guidance to:

  • Customers
  • IT users within an organisation

They may provide this support directly to the individual or by telephone, e-mail or other network interaction.

Job titles include:

  • Help desk operator
  • Helpline operator (computing)
  • IT helpline support officer
  • Support technician (computing)
  • Systems support officer.

 IT administration jobs

This sector is about working on a database as an assistant or clerk, usually creating, maintaining, preserving and updating information held in electronic databases, computer files, voice-mailboxes and email systems.

Job titles include:

  • Computer clerk
  • Data entry clerk
  • Data processor
  • VDU operator.

 IT engineering jobs

This sector is about the installation and maintenance of computers.  Computer engineers install, maintain and repair personal computers, mainframe and other computer hardware.

Job titles include:

  • Computer engineer
  • Computer maintenance engineer
  • Computer service engineer
  • Computer service technician.
